It was a cold day in New York City. The crew that spends most of their time in the sky has taken the day off to explore the NYC streets after an 8 day shift. Angel MedFlight medical crew Darren Thenell (AMF Medic) and Michelle Lohof (AMF Registered Nurse) suited up for some cold, but fun times.
In the busy NYC subway, Darren and Michelle had the pleasure of hearing some great music and taking in some of the city’s contracted art. Waiting for the subway for a New Yorker may not be the most exciting part of the day, but these out-of-towners were happy to have some entertainment while they waited.
Strolling the streets after a great experience in the NY subway, Darren and Michelle made their way to the September 11th memorial site. From here, they could see the new Freedom Tower and buildings like St. Paul’s Chapel that withstood the destruction.
The next destination: Times Square. On the way, Darren and Michelle spoke with some of New York’s Finest. After some brief chit-chat, Darren and Michelle revealed what Angel MedFlight Worldwide Ambulance Service does and their involvement. The response was very positive and they think it is a great service. We’ll take that as a big compliment.
Finally, the duo hit Times Square. The lights, sounds, and culture are overwhelming – in a good way. There is so much activity and the cold weather seems to have little effect on the natives. After lots of walking and a day filled with new sights, education, and encounters, hunger strikes. What is that smell?
Hot dogs! Yes, real New York City hot dogs. The reputation around the United States for these amazing culinary masterpieces did not disappoint – as seen by Darren. After a brief break, they move on to experience more of NYC.
The air ambulance crew finds the station dedicated to Engine Company 54, Truck 4, and Battalion 9 all lost on September 11th. The emotion of gratitude and respect fills the room. From the plaques, to the lockers, to the vehicles, these firefighters remain honored and remembered for their courage and sacrifice. Each firefighter lost is featured on a bright display called the “Pride of Midtown”.
